What stood out most was the support. Having worked in IT for two decades, I've dealt with many vendors, and Votiro's team ranks among the best. They respond quickly, have skilled engineers who stay until issues are resolved, and can escalate directly to developers when needed. I also appreciated their innovative approach. From their early Windows installer to the current Linux-based virtual appliances, their evolution has been impressive. I submitted several feature suggestions early on; some were implemented in the next release, others later. After three years, I got an email saying one of my old suggestions was finally being added. It was a pleasant surprise to see those tickets weren't forgotten but were tracked and valued. They've also expanded file type support over time. Once deployed, it's practically maintenance-free. It just runs. The only things to watch are disk space and license expiry. When my license needed renewal, support issued a temporary one without hassle. It's essentially another MTA, so you just route emails to it. The policy/ruleset configuration UI is intuitive; once you get the hang of it, you can set up almost any scenario. Upgrades are handled by their team – just open a ticket and they do everything. They're fast, usually responding the same day, sometimes within the hour. Any questions, they're always helpful. You can release original emails to users directly from the web interface if needed, but I'd recommend testing such attachments in an isolated VM. Upgrades can take time if things go wrong, so plan for downtime. We have an MTA in front, so we can reroute if necessary. Votiro stays with you until fixes are done. I loved the old version's feature that reported how many infections were prevented. They saved suspicious files, rescanned them with updated AV signatures, and when a later detection occurred, they generated a report showing Votiro had held back a file that was later flagged as a virus. They said they'd bring this back in a future version. It's great for showing management the value. I hope they eventually expand to scanning web downloads, not just email. Currently they support larger solutions like Menlo and Fireglass. A simple option for small businesses would be great – they mentioned they're looking into it. Our goal was to remove active content from attachments so we could still deliver them, and Votiro did exactly that. It strips javascript from PDFs, macros from Office docs, etc., reducing help desk calls. Even password-protected files work – users get a link to enter the password, Votiro processes it, and delivers a clean file. It's magic. To me, removing executable content is the best defense against zero-day exploits.
