About ActiveState

ActiveState is a platform that provides secure open source components for enterprise development. It addresses the challenges of open source software security in the age of AI-generated code, where developers and AI assistants pull packages from public registries, introducing vulnerabilities and compliance risks. ActiveState curates a catalog of over 79 million components across 12+ language ecosystems, building each package from original source code in a hardened environment with SLSA Level 3 infrastructure. This ensures full provenance, verifiable integrity, and complete SBOMs for every artifact. ActiveState continuously monitors for vulnerabilities and patches critical CVEs within 5 business days, significantly reducing the attack surface and scanner noise. It integrates natively with existing workflows such as artifact repositories, CI/CD pipelines, container orchestration, and IDEs, allowing teams to adopt it without disruption. By providing a managed source of trusted open source, ActiveState helps organizations reduce open source risk, improve security posture, and reclaim developer time, making it a valuable solution for security, engineering, and DevOps teams in regulated industries. AiDOOS enhances the deployment and adoption of ActiveState by offering a comprehensive service ecosystem that simplifies implementation, provides managed support, and accelerates time-to-value for enterprises seeking robust open source governance.

Challenges It Solves

  • Vulnerabilities from open source dependencies, especially in AI-generated code
  • Lack of provenance and tamper-proof integrity in public registries
  • Manual CVE triaging and remediation consuming developer time
  • Difficulty enforcing open source policies across the organization

"Great platform for getting stable builds across versions"
Sometimes they even support very old, outdated versions, which is a big help when you have no other options. They provide excellent suggestions for the minimal version jump you need to fix your current problem. Good things come with a price, though; the pricing is a bit high for the support they provide. If they could offer community support or something similar, it would benefit developers. ActiveState provides ready-to-use open-source and commercial builds for Perl, Python, etc. It's especially beneficial for me with Perl builds—now I can pick any version, build it, and test my use cases conveniently.

"Simpler than Docker"
You don't need to containerize everything. Keeping dependencies where they need to be has never been easier. I've used it multiple times and often recommend it. It's not widely known in the tech community, so users might not know how to use ActiveState, whereas building a Docker container is common knowledge. It's just a matter of time. It's easy to install dependencies and removes the frustrations associated with installing applications.

"Amazing service"
Build progress monitoring and easy installation. Nothing negative to say, but how about integration with more runtimes like Golang? In my company, we had a major issue with project dependencies, and ActiveState helped us build large dependency images.

"Will help me achieve my potential with the technology I need to succeed in my business"
It works well with Firefox, and the communication I've had with them has been very professional. I've recommended it to others who have their own businesses. So far, I haven't encountered any issues, and I hope it continues that way. The platform is easy to use for installing Python, Perl, and Tcl software on my devices, and it's helpful for configuring, troubleshooting, and restoring applications.

"Fantastic work tool"
The significant advantages it offers for developing my projects, especially in terms of security, along with a great community and a ready-to-use software supply chain security solution that covers the entire process of importing, building, and consuming open source. I'm not fond of the customer service response time—sometimes it's a bit slow, but the community provides enough help. However, I'd appreciate faster support, even with the free version. Apart from that, I have no complaints about the security aspects, like security issues in a Python environment, and the turnkey software supply chain security solution that encompasses the entire process of importing, building, and consuming open source.

"I absolutely love it!"
I love that I can find all the programs I need in one place; it makes life much easier. Additionally, there are different categories for various types of users. I don't really have any dislikes. Well, maybe one suggestion would be to include more websites and programs for people in fields outside of computer and business management. I think many of the issues ActiveState Platform addresses are related to statistical analysis programs. Being in academia, I frequently need to analyze large datasets, and ActiveState Platform helps me locate the right software.

"Extremely easy-to-use platform, makes coding much simpler"
The platform is simple to use and fast, with an active community ready to assist if I run into problems. I haven't faced many issues, though I did have some initial difficulty getting Perl built correctly, but community members helped me get unstuck. It offers a quick and cost-effective way to compile code for multiple platforms without needing many physical build hosts or a dedicated infrastructure, as they handle the messy parts for us.

"Overly intricate alternative to Git"
The primary reason I use this platform is because it provides the Tcl download, but I must note that the process is quite cumbersome (more details below). Apart from that, the website's GUI is decent. When I first visit the site, I'm unsure what it's intended for—is it a Git, Docker, or GitHub Actions competitor? Even after reading the About page and other info, it's mostly corporate jargon that doesn't help users determine if it fits their needs. It emphasizes building too much; it should be more like Git, focusing on code. With Git, you see code immediately, but with ActiveState, you only see builds, which isn't intuitive. Apart from retrieving Tcl, I don't see any benefit to using ActiveState over GitHub or GitHub Actions. Honestly, even a simple Dockerfile is better than this...

"Incredibly user-friendly and valuable"
Correctly configuring a runtime for a project, especially when you need to apply patches to get it functioning, can be a major headache. I've spent countless hours on that. ActiveState eliminates this problem and saves a ton of time. So far, I've liked every aspect of ActiveState and haven't encountered anything I disliked. "Excellent for open-source compliance in corporate settings, but getting started is tough"
This tool significantly streamlines managing open-source license compliance, particularly in corporate environments where licensing control and audit trails matter. The initial setup wasn't straightforward, but after several attempts, we finally figured it out. ActiveState Platform ensures that development and production environments are consistent, secure, and reproducible, making it easier to handle dependencies and open-source components across teams.
