Engine Development at Kratos
Kratos is actively developing various types of small engines, including turbojets in the 100-300lb thrust class, turbofan engines in the 600-900lb thrust class, and turbo-alternators ranging from 5kW to 50kW power class. These engine concepts cover a wide spectrum, ranging from subsonic to hypersonic propulsion systems, showcasing Kratos' versatility and expertise in propulsion technology.
Innovative Projects and Collaborations
One of Kratos' spotlight projects is the development of a new turbofan engine in collaboration with the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). This partnership has resulted in a $54M task order contract to create a low-cost, limited-life engine suitable for attritable and expendable systems. Advanced Turbine Technologies for Affordable Mission (ATTAM)
Kratos' Florida Turbine Technologies subsidiary has secured an indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract for Advanced Turbine Technologies for Affordable Mission (ATTAM) capability Phase I. This program aims to enhance turbine propulsion, power, and thermal technologies to drive affordable mission capability. With work slated to be completed in Jupiter, Florida by December 2026, Kratos continues to push the boundaries of turbine technology.
New Engine Test Facility and Capabilities
Kratos has launched its state-of-the-art X-58 test facility that facilitates demonstrator engine development testing. This mobile facility is equipped to handle fully instrumented engines up to 3000-lb thrust with noise suppression features that mitigate environmental impacts. With a focus on low-cost and high-performance small jet engines, Kratos is leading the way in engine innovation for cruise missiles, powered munitions, and UAVs.
Liquid Rocket Turbopumps & Electric Pumps
Kratos specializes in designing, constructing, and testing a range of space and derivative technologies, including liquid rocket engine turbopumps, turbo-generators, boost pumps, electric pumps, and more. This expertise extends to various propellant systems, such as liquid hydrogen, methane, oxygen, RP-1, and hypergolic systems.
