Modernizing Indian Airspace with Indra's Automation and Surveillance Systems

India, as the seventh-largest country by area in the world, embarked on a journey to modernize its airspace control for enhanced safety, efficiency, and increased airport and airspace capacity. This initiative led to the installation of Indra's ATS Automation Systems and Surveillance Radars across 80% of the Indian airspace. Airports Authority of India (AAI), responsible for managing 125 airports, including 11 international ones, selected Indra to provide 38 tower automation systems in various configurations for different airports in India.

Cutting-Edge Technology for Air Traffic Management

Indra supplied its advanced technology to AAI, enabling the Indian Air Navigation Service Provider to achieve the highest safety and efficiency standards for controlling the entire Indian airspace. With nine Monopulse Secondary Surveillance mode S radars and 38 automation systems for airports, Indra's solutions cover a significant portion of Indian airspace. The systems, like the one in Kolkata ACC, offer 4D trajectory calculation, advanced safety net features, conflict detection, and altitude warnings, significantly enhancing air safety.

Indra's state-of-the-art Air Traffic Management system has made Indian airspace one of the safest globally. The technology provides better aircraft detection performance and accuracy over long distances, supporting the increased air traffic. With improved technology and coordination, Kolkata and Delhi's Area Control Centers have become crucial hubs for managing air traffic. The adoption of Indra's technology has reduced the workload on air traffic controllers despite the growth in Indian flights and airspace.

Adding Value to AAI's Air Traffic Services

The collaboration between Kolkata and Delhi's Area Control Centers, along with the 38 towers and nine radar systems, has significantly improved air traffic services in India. These systems support En-Route, Approach, and Tower operations within Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, and Guwahati FIRs, ensuring the safe travel of over 190 million passengers through Indian airspace. Indra's automation and surveillance systems have been instrumental in enhancing air traffic safety and efficiency in India.
