Revolutionizing Ultrasonic Testing with Focused Array Surface Adapting Technology

The FASAT Advantage

Phased array technology has revolutionized ultrasonic testing inspections, offering a flexible and precise way to conduct inspections. Unlike traditional methods that are constrained by preset focal laws and surface conditions, Focused Array Surface Adapting Technology (FASAT) overcomes these limitations. FASAT is designed to adapt to complex geometries such as weld crowns, tapers, steps, elbows, and asymmetric shapes, enabling complete volumetric inspections with a single scan.

The FASAT System

The FASAT system consists of an array transducer or transducer set, a captive couplant probe, a scanner, UT pulser/receiver instrument, computers, and operating software. This system allows for precise control over pulsing and receiving of ultrasonic RF data, enabling the storage of all acquisition data for unlimited processing capabilities without the need for rescanning. The FASAT system leverages advanced computing power to perform real-time focusing through complex surfaces and store raw data for future analysis and evaluation.

Measurement thru Grayloc® Weld Cap

One notable application of FASAT technology is the measurement of thickness through CANDU® feeder tube Grayloc® weld caps. FASAT has demonstrated its ability to accurately map surface profiles and obtain high-quality back wall reflections through complex weld geometries, showcasing its precision and reliability in challenging inspection scenarios.

Applications

The versatility of FASAT enables a wide range of inspection applications, including wavy or smooth welds, weld overlays, nozzles, pipe elbows, tapered parts, wing structures, blades, pipe T’s, and in-process manufacturing. With the ability to inspect multi-dimensional surfaces, store raw data, and manipulate it as needed, FASAT provides operators with the flexibility and control to optimize inspections based on specific requirements.
