Since its inception in 1985, BWXT's hot cell facility has been pivotal in conducting crucial investigations related to commercial light water reactor fuel rods. The facility also facilitates examinations of advanced spacer grid designs, failed in-core instrument detectors, failed fuel rods, and high flux irradiation exposure testing of electrical components for nuclear reactors. Detailed Cell Descriptions and Equipment Availability

Cell 1, the largest, accommodates full-length commercial LWR fuel assemblies and rods and is rated for 300,000 Ci of Co-60. Cell 2 is primarily utilized for metallography purposes and can handle up to 6,000 Ci of Co-60. Cell 3 and Cell 4 cater to different capacities and requirements with varying dimensions and radiation tolerance levels. The facility is well-equipped with advanced tools such as fuel rod gamma scan stations, ITI periscopes, metallographic sample preparation equipment, and more.
