Founded in Cleveland, Ohio in 1982 by Darrell Issa and his wife Kathy, DIRECTED Electronics started as a manufacturer of vehicle security products. Recognizing the increasing rates of automobile theft, especially in urban areas, the company quickly expanded after relocating to Southern California in 1986.
The commitment to research and development led to groundbreaking advancements in integrated circuit-controlled security systems, prompting the introduction of the VIPER® and Python® brands. Sales soared between 1989 and 1990, earning DIRECTED a spot on the Inc. 500 list the following year. Throughout the 1990s, DIRECTED experienced significant growth and received numerous awards for innovation.
The company developed the first PC-programmable security systems and achieved up to a quarter-mile range from keychain remote controls. Expanding its product line, DIRECTED entered the car audio business and acquired the Clifford® and Avital® brands in 2000, solidifying its position as a leader in consumer vehicle security and remote start technologies.
In a new millennium, a major transition occurred when Darrell and Kathy Issa sold a controlling interest in the company to Trivest, Inc. in 2000. Jim Minarik assumed the role of President and CEO, overseeing the acquisition of additional brands like Orion® Car Audio and Definitive Technology®. Going public in 2005, DIRECTED continued expanding its footprint by acquiring Polk Audio® and establishing a presence in Canada through strategic acquisitions.
In 2008, reflecting its growth and diversification, the company adopted a holding structure and rebranded as DEI Holdings, Inc. The acquisition by Charlesbank Capital Partners in 2011 further strengthened DIRECTED's position in the market.
