DLC Product Eligibility and Primary Use Designations for LED Lighting

Introduction to Product Eligibility and Primary Use Designations

The DesignLights Consortium (DLC) qualifies various LED lighting products for inclusion in energy efficiency rebate and incentive programs. Product eligibility is based on specific Primary Use Designations (PUD) developed by DLC energy efficiency program Members. These designations define how a product is intended to be used and are crucial for qualification.

Understanding Primary Use Designations

Primary Use Designations (PUD) provide a detailed description of the intended use type of a product. Manufacturers must market their products for one of the available Primary Use Designations to qualify. If a product is marketed for multiple uses, it must be qualified under all relevant designations to claim DLC qualification.

Eligible Luminaires

The DLC qualifies various types of LED luminaires for inclusion in energy efficiency programs. These include Outdoor Pole/Arm-Mounted Area and Roadway Luminaires, Outdoor Pole/Arm-Mounted Decorative Luminaires, Outdoor Full-Cutoff Wall-Mounted Area Luminaires, Bollards, Parking Garage Luminaires, Fuel Pump Canopy Luminaires, Landscape/Accent Flood and Spot Luminaires, and more. Each luminaire type has specific design criteria and applications, ensuring energy-efficient lighting solutions for various settings.

Specific Luminaire Categories

The DLC recognizes the importance of different lighting applications and has designated specific categories for products like Stairwell/Passageway Luminaires, Wall-Wash Luminaires, Track or Mono-Point Directional Luminaires, Refrigerated Case Luminaires, and Display Case Luminaires. Each category addresses unique lighting requirements to enhance energy efficiency and lighting quality in commercial and industrial spaces.

Benefits of DLC Qualification

LED lighting products that meet DLC qualifications not only benefit from inclusion in energy efficiency programs but also demonstrate adherence to industry standards and energy-saving initiatives. End-users can access rebates and incentives for using DLC-qualified products, promoting sustainable lighting practices and reducing energy consumption. Additionally, DLC qualification enhances product credibility and market competitiveness.

Maximizing LED Lighting Efficiency: DLC Reports and Resources

Control Savings Factors Clarification

The memo provides key clarifications on the 2020 report regarding Energy Savings from Networked Lighting Control (NLC) Systems. It emphasizes the importance of proper NLC system programming for higher savings, as control savings factors are influenced by system setup and optimization. The report highlights that specific control strategies like high-end trim can deliver distinct energy savings by reducing the lighting load first, allowing energy savings from the remaining load. Energy efficiency programs can leverage these strategies to maximize savings.

Streamlining Product Qualification Process with Level 1 Applications

Eligibility for Level 1 Applications

Level 1 applications allow for the submission of a single product or a family of models with minor differences. These differences can include CCT, dimming capabilities, voltage variations, or variations that do not affect performance, such as housing color. To qualify, the efficacy testing needs to cover the lowest-CCT product in the group. If there are multiple efficacy requirements necessitating multiple tests, a Level 2 application is recommended.

Private Label Applications for Qualifying Products

Private Label Eligibility

Private Label applications allow products to be listed under a private label as long as they are identical to the originally qualified versions from the OEM. To submit a Private Label application, the OEM product must already be DLC qualified. If using OEM test reports for unqualified products, complete the Test Report Authorization Form and submit either a Level 1 or Level 2 application. Organizations handling multiple brands must provide private label documentation and fees with the original application. Wholly-owned subsidiaries using different model numbers/brands must follow this process.
